How to edit videos with AI, step by step
Editing with AI is mostly about saying clearly what you want. This guide walks through a full edit in Split, from raw clips to an exported video.
1. Get Split and sign in
Download Split for Windows or Android and create an account. New accounts get free credits for the AI.
2. Import your clips
On Home, click Add clips (or New project, then Import media). You can bring in videos, photos and music. On a phone, pick them from the gallery.
3. Describe the edit
Type what you want into the box on Home or the SplitIT chat. Good requests say the goal and the length:
- “Cut the silences, add captions, and keep it under 60 seconds.”
- “Make a 30-second highlight with fast cuts and a title at the start.”
- “Cut my clips to the beat of the song and end on the logo shot.”
Split shows what the edit will cost in credits before it starts.
4. Check the timeline and adjust
SplitIT builds the edit on a normal timeline. Play it back. If something is off, either ask for a change (“make the captions bigger and yellow”) or fix it by hand. Changes on the same video are included in the edit you already paid for.
5. Export
Click Export, pick 720p, 1080p or 4K and a frame rate, and save. You can change the shape first with the Aspect ratio button: 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, 16:9 for YouTube, 1:1 or 4:5 for feeds.
Tips for better AI edits
- Name the platform: “for TikTok” tells the AI to go vertical and short.
- Give a length: “under 45 seconds” beats “short”.
- Attach a reference video if you have a style in mind, or use Genjitsu to copy it closely.
- Keep clips you don't want out of the project: the AI uses what's there.
Questions
What is the easiest way to edit videos with AI?
Import your clips into Split and describe the edit in one sentence, including the length and platform. SplitIT builds it on the timeline, and you export it.
Can I edit videos with AI on my phone?
Yes. Split's Android app has the same AI (SplitIT and Genjitsu) as the Windows app.
